Entomology

North Macedonia is characterized by a rich and diverse entomofauna, with a large number of species, including many endemics. The class Insecta is the most numerous, comprising approximately 6,198 species, more than 200 of which are endemic. This remarkable biological diversity is the result of the country’s geographical position, the combination of Mediterranean and Central European climates, and a wide range of abiotic environmental conditions. Based on these natural factors, the Department of Entomology was established in 1941 by Dr. Krsto Tuleshkov.

The department’s professional staff is engaged in the research, collection, preparation, study, conservation, and publication of entomological material. In addition, the department prepares and participates in the realization of thematic, temporary, and permanent entomological museum exhibitions.

The entomological collection comprises 190,309 specimens, systematically organized into several collections, including:

  • Vespidae

  • Carabidae

  • Staphylinidae

  • Curculionidae

  • Cicadidae

  • Odonata

  • Neuroptera

  • Orthoptera

  • Syrphidae

  • Lepidoptera (diurnal and nocturnal butterflies)
