Botany
The Department of Botany was established as an independent unit in 1959, with its origins dating back to 1957 following the employment of Vladimir Zabijakin, who initiated the renewal and development of the department. Initially, activities focused on the collection of dendroflora, mosses, and wetland plants, and were later expanded to include other plant groups.
North Macedonia is characterized by a rich floristic heritage, dominated by vascular plants, particularly flowering plants, as well as mosses and ferns.
Today, the exhibition is systematically organized and presents approximately 200 species of herbarium specimens, accompanied by photographs and educational panels. Scientific research is focused on endemic, relict, and rare plant species, as well as on the genera Campanula, Orobanche, Scabiosa, Allium, and others.
More than 34,000 herbarium sheets are preserved in the museum storage, and the museum herbarium is officially registered in the Index Herbariorum of the New York Botanical Garden (code HMMNH).
