Ornithology

The ornithofauna of North Macedonia has been studied by a limited number of ornithologists, individually and during different periods. The most important centers of bird diversity include the three natural lakes, which are key habitats for waterbirds, river gorges that support birds of prey, and mountain massifs that host boreal and arcto-alpine species complexes.

The Department of Ornithology is dedicated to the study of birds, their geographical distribution, morphological characteristics, ecological roles, evolutionary development, and other related aspects.

Based on research conducted to date, approximately 335 bird species have been recorded in North Macedonia, representing about 64% of the total number of bird species in Europe.

The museum maintains a relatively large bird collection, consisting of 1,989 specimens representing 262 species, collected by:

  • Dr. Stanko Karaman (1925–1953, at least 424 specimens)

  • Kiro Bogoevski (1937–1980, at least 649 specimens)

  • Dr. Risto Grupche (95 specimens)

  • Dr. Svetozar Petkovski (74 specimens)

  • Makedon Petlicharov (18 specimens)

  • Gjorgjija Gjorgjievski (26 specimens)

  • Todor Ivanovski (159 specimens)

In addition, a smaller number of bird specimens were donated by individual contributors.

The permanent museum exhibition displays 253 bird species, with more than 459 prepared specimens, presented according to their systematic classification and within their natural habitats.
